Grinding and polishing technology of titanium alloy

1. Fine grinding
That is, the surface of titanium and titanium alloy castings is ground by conventional various types of emery rubber wheels. Attention should be paid to the problem of grinding is still not to make the casting heat, can not cause the surface of the casting grinding injury, and make the whole surface to achieve smooth.

2. Barrel grinding method
The so-called barrel grinding method is to put the processed casting, abrasive material, water and additives into the barrel grinding groove, and the grinding barrel will rotate and vibrate to produce friction between the mixture of abrasive material and the processed casting, and the surface of the casting will be smooth and smooth. It is characterized by no dust pollution, low labor intensity, and no heat production in the conventional grinding process. At present, there are already commercial barrel grinders in Japan and grinders used for grinding titanium alloy castings, other metal castings and plastics. Through the test, it is confirmed that the grinding efficiency of pk series abrasive is the highest, but the surface roughness rate is also the highest. Although the grinding efficiency of SA and B series abrasives is not as good as PK, the surface smoothness of titanium castings after grinding is the highest.

3. Mechanical polishing method
The method of polishing the surface of titanium and titanium alloy by dipping titanium and titanium alloy special polishing paste with soft cloth or black brush of different specifications. When polishing titanium castings, the surface contamination layer and no new grinding and hardening layer must be completely clear, which will not achieve the ideal polishing effect. High speed and light pressure should be used when polishing. The authors have also experimented with the use of green polishing paste for the polishing of titanium and titanium alloy castings and achieved satisfactory polishing results. After polishing, titanium and titanium castings containing titanium alloy can not be washed immediately. Washing can be carried out only when the surface oxide film is completely formed, otherwise the surface will be darkened.
