Ultrasonic inspection and color inspection: to ensure the quality of titanium processing

In the process of titanium material processing, the importance of flaw detection technology is self-evident. Each batch of finished products must undergo strict flaw detection before leaving the factory, which is to ensure that there are no defects inside the titanium material, so as to meet the needs of customers and product standards. At present, ultrasonic inspection is the most widely used method of inspection.

Ultrasonic inspection
Ultrasonic inspection, as the name suggests, is a detection method based on the principle of sound waves. It can accurately detect the fine defects inside the welding parts, such as pores, cracks, inclusions and pores. Its working principle is to use the propagation speed and reflection characteristics of ultrasonic waves in different materials, by measuring the relative change and amplitude of the acoustic signal, to achieve accurate measurement of material or weld size defects or attenuation.

Color inspection
At the same time, color flaw detection is a visual inspection means, mainly used to detect cracks, inclusions and burrs and other defects on the surface of materials. This method is to evenly spray the penetrant on the welding surface, and after 10-15 minutes of penetration to clean off the excess penetrant, and then apply the developer, and finally in the white light illuminance should be greater than 1000Lx, by the naked eye or microscope to identify the defect.

Comparison of advantages and disadvantages
In comparing the advantages and disadvantages of color inspection and ultrasonic inspection, we found that:

Although the operation of color flaw detection is simple and intuitive, it can only detect surface defects, and can do nothing for deep defects, and the operation process is relatively complicated.

Ultrasonic inspection can penetrate deep into the interior of the welding parts to find those imperceptible defects, with higher precision, depth and reliability. However, ultrasonic inspection has high requirements for technicians and expensive equipment, which increases the cost of inspection to a certain extent.

Sum up
In summary, color detection and ultrasonic detection have their own applications in the processing of titanium materials. The former is mainly used for the detection of surface defects, while the latter is good at the detection of internal defects. In practical applications, we should choose the most appropriate flaw detection method according to the characteristics of the product and the needs of customers to ensure the best quality of the product.
