Zirconium Niobium alloys
Properties of Zr-Nb alloy
Niobium(Nb) has outstanding strengthening effect on Zirconium(Zr). There is a stable beta phase during quenching. The increase in strength of Zr-Nb alloy is determined by the transition from beta solution to martensite. As content of Nb increases, more beta phase is fixed, and the strength decreases. Nb can eliminate the harm of C, Ti, Al and other impurities to Zirconium’s corrosion resistance and reduce the hydrogen absorption.
Like other Zirconium alloys, the corrosion properties of Zr-1Nb are related to the microstructure after heat treatment.
After quenching and aging of Zr-2.5Nb, the β-Nb precipitate phase was precipitated from supersaturated α-Zr, which was favorable for improving corrosion resistance when it was small and uniformly distributed.
Application of Zr-Nb alloy
Zr-Nb alloys are also used as cladding materials for heavy water reactors, nuclear power plants and submarine reactors.
