Analysis of Titanium Alloy Machining Characteristics

First, titanium alloy has a low thermal conductivity—only one-fourth that of steel, one-thirteenth that of aluminum, and one-twenty-fifth that of copper. Due to slow heat dissipation in the cutting zone, which hinders thermal equilibrium, the cooling and heat dissipation effects during machining are poor. This easily leads to high temperatures in the cutting zone, resulting in significant deformation and springback of the workpiece after processing. Consequently, the torque on the cutting tool increases, the cutting edge wears rapidly, and tool life is reduced.

Secondly, titanium alloys have low thermal conductivity, causing cutting heat to accumulate in a small area near the cutting edge and making it difficult to dissipate. This increases friction on the rake face, hinders chip evacuation, and impedes heat dissipation, thereby accelerating tool wear. Finally, titanium alloys are highly chemically reactive; during high-temperature machining, they readily react with the tool material, leading to dissolution and diffusion, which can result in phenomena such as tool adhesion, burning, and breakage.
Characteristics of machining titanium alloy on machining centers
Machining centers can process multiple parts simultaneously, improving production efficiency and enhancing machining accuracy, resulting in high product consistency. Equipped with tool compensation functions, they achieve the machine's inherent precision. With broad adaptability and great flexibility, they can handle various operations such as arc machining, chamfering, and fillet transitions, enabling multi-functional capabilities on a single machine. Machining centers support a series of processes including milling, drilling, boring, and tapping. They allow precise cost calculation and effective production scheduling. Eliminating the need for dedicated fixtures reduces costs significantly and shortens production cycles, greatly reducing workers' labor intensity. They are compatible with multi-axis machining software such as UG.
