Titanium alloy forging cutting process

The cutting process of titanium alloy forgings must meet the following requirements:
(1) The cut edges should be smooth, and the metal on the blank should not fall off.
(2) The areas adjacent to the cut edge of the blank must not have cracks, nor should there be uneven grain size due to uneven deformation during the cutting process.
(3) No indentation from the punch should be left on the cut edge of the blank, and the punch and the part should be completely consistent in shape.
For small batches, the cutting can be done using a milling machine or by using a band saw and a specially designed friction plate to remove the burrs. For large forgings and thick burrs, regardless of the size of the part or the batch size, hot cutting is not convenient. Flame cutting is an effective method. Using oxygen-gas, plasma and other technologies can successfully and economically cut burrs of 50mm or thicker. After flame cutting, heat treatment should be carried out to make the heat-affected zone suitable for mechanical processing. For medium and small-sized titanium alloy forgings with large batches, usually, the cutting is done using molds on a crank press, and the cutting is carried out at 600-800℃. If correction must be done immediately after cutting, the cutting temperature should be close to the upper limit. Titanium alloys are rarely cut using molds in the cold state because the burrs are very hard and brittle, which can easily cause uneven cut edges, and even lead to the danger of metal cracking and rapid splashing of debris; for some alloyed alloys with high alloying degree, cold cutting can cause cracks in the shear surface, and cracks will sometimes extend to the interior of the metal.
